Oconee Farmers Market Weekly Newsletterβ
Make Saturday a Market Day!
β
Saturday mornings have a way of filling up quickly.
β
There are errands to run, things to do around the house, football to watch, and a dozen other things competing for your time.
But somewhere in the middle of all of that, we hope you'll save a little room for the Oconee Farmers Market.
Because an hour at the Market can accomplish quite a lot!
β
You can pick up something fresh for the week ahead, find something delicious for the weekend, discover something handmade, visit with a farmer or maker, run into someone you know—and maybe even find something you never planned on buying.
That's a pretty good Saturday morning if you ask us!
Join us this Saturday from 9:00 AM–1:00 PM at Wire Park.
Bring your market bag and come see what's waiting for you!
β
Behind Every Table Is Someone Local
β
When you walk through the Farmers Market, it's easy to see the vegetables, breads, flowers, jars, jewelry, baked goods and handmade items displayed on the tables.
What you don't always see are all the hours that came before Saturday morning.
*Someone planted those seeds.
*Someone tended those plants.
*Someone stayed up baking.
*Someone spent hours creating that handmade piece.
*Someone bottled, packaged, labeled, loaded a vehicle and got up early Saturday morning to bring it all to you.
That's what makes shopping at a Farmers Market different.
You're not simply buying a product. You're supporting the person who grew it, baked it, made it or created it.
And every purchase—big or small—matters.
β
A Little Sneak Peek
Wondering what you'll find this Saturday?
That's part of the fun!
Our vendors are busy preparing for another Market morning with fresh seasonal produce, baked goods, locally made products, handmade creations and plenty of Market favorites.
Of course, availability changes from week to week—that's what happens when you shop with real farmers and small businesses!
So take a walk through the entire Market before you decide what's going home with you.
You might just discover a new favorite.
β
Coming Up at the Market
β
We still have plenty of Saturday mornings ahead of us, and we're already looking toward the special events coming later this fall and into the holiday season.
π Harvest Fest — October 24
One of our biggest celebrations of the season! We'll be bringing our Market community together to enjoy the fall season, our wonderful vendors, and everything that makes shopping local so special.
π¬ Movie Night & Black Saturday — November 13 & November 29
Our regular Saturday Market season may wrap up in October, but we're not done yet! We'll have special November events planned, so keep watching for more details.
π Christmas at Wire Park — December 12 & 19
And then it's Christmas! Two special opportunities to shop small, shop local, and find unique gifts while supporting the wonderful businesses and artisans in our community.
We'll be sharing more details about each event as we get closer, so be sure to keep an eye on our social media and future newsletters.
Fall Festival Weekend — October 17
β
Mark your calendars because the Market will be making a little move in October!
On Saturday, October 17, the Oconee Farmers Market will be celebrating the Watkinsville Fall Festival in Downtown Watkinsville.
Instead of our usual location at Wire Park, you'll find the Market in the Girasoles parking lot in Downtown Watkinsville.
And because we're celebrating, we'll be changing our hours for the day to match the festival:
π Saturday, October 17
π Girasoles Parking Lot — Downtown Watkinsville
β° 8:00 AM–3:00 PM
β
So plan to come early, stay awhile, enjoy the Fall Festival, and of course, stop by and shop with our wonderful local farmers, makers, and small businesses!
It's going to be a fun day in Downtown Watkinsville, and we can't wait to be part of it.
More details about the Fall Festival and everything happening that day will be coming soon!
β
A Saturday Morning Worth Getting Up For
There are so many places you could spend your Saturday morning.
We hope you'll choose to spend at least a little bit of it with us.
Come grab a coffee, walk through the Market, talk with our vendors, see what's fresh, and enjoy being part of something local.
Because the Farmers Market is more than just a place to shop.
*It's our farmers.
*It's our makers.
*It's our small businesses.
*It's our families.
*It's our neighbors.
*It's our community.
And every Saturday that you show up, you help make the Market possible.
Thank you for continuing to shop local, support small, and show up for the people who grow, bake, create, and make right here in our community.
We can't wait to see you Saturday!

π Produce Spotlight: Pears
β
There’s something about a fresh pear that makes it feel like fall is getting a little closer!
β
Pears are wonderfully versatile—sweet enough to enjoy right out of your hand, but also delicious sliced into salads, baked into desserts, paired with cheese, or even roasted alongside savory dishes.
β
And here's something helpful to know when buying them: many pears ripen best after they're picked. Unlike a lot of fruit, you don't necessarily want to choose the softest pear at the Market. Take it home and let it ripen at room temperature. To check it, gently press near the stem—when it gives just a little, it's ready to enjoy.
β
For an easy fall treat, slice a ripe pear and pair it with local honey and your favorite cheese. π―
β
Sweet, simple and delicious—pick up some locally grown pears at the Market and bring a little taste of the season home! π
π― DID YOU KNOW? — Honey Never Really Spoils!
β
Did you know that properly stored honey can remain edible for an incredibly long time?
β
Honey naturally contains very little moisture and is quite acidic, which makes it difficult for bacteria and other microorganisms to grow.
β
And if that jar of local honey in your pantry starts to turn cloudy or develops little crystals, don’t throw it away! Crystallization is a completely natural process and does not mean your honey has gone bad.
β
You can gently warm the jar in a bowl of warm water, and those crystals will begin to dissolve.
β
In fact, crystallization can be a sign that your honey has been kept in a more natural state rather than heavily processed.
β
So when your honey gets a little grainy, don't toss it—it's just doing what honey does! π―π
π Community Happenings

As We Head Into Fall
β
As we head into fall, you may notice that some of our farmers’ tables begin to look a little different. There will still be fresh vegetables coming to the Market, but we may not have the same abundance or variety that we had earlier in the season.
And that’s part of what a true farmers market is all about.
β
Our farmers bring you what they are actually growing and harvesting right here in our area. Their tables reflect the seasons—and sometimes, they reflect the challenges Mother Nature has handed them.
This year, our growers have dealt with extreme heat and dry conditions, and that can have a real impact on what survives, what produces, and ultimately what they are able to bring to Market each Saturday.
So as we move through these remaining weeks of our regular season, I have one little request:
Please continue to support our farmers. β€οΈ
Stop by their tables even when the selection is smaller. Ask what they harvested that week. Try a vegetable you might not normally buy. And when you see something fresh and locally grown, remember just how much work went into getting it from their field to your table.
Supporting local agriculture isn't only about being there when the tables are overflowing. Sometimes it matters even more when they aren't.
Our farmers continue to show up for us every Saturday with whatever the season allows them to harvest.
I hope we'll continue to show up for them, too.
