What a beautiful season it has already been at the Market. Even with the weather trying to keep us guessing lately, we’ve had wonderful Saturdays filled with smiling faces, fresh produce, handmade goods, and the kind of community that makes the Oconee Farmers Market feel like home.

This week, we’ll once again be set up in the large grassy area between The Flats at Wire Park from 9 AM – 1 PM, and we are so excited about everything happening over the next couple of weeks!

​One of our favorite parts of the Market isn’t just the fresh food — it’s the people and stories that make this community so special. This week, we wanted to share a longtime customer tradition.

​

For years, Mr. Luther has been a cherished friend of the Oconee Farmers Market family. His connection to the Market began long before Wire Park — back when the Market was held on Main Street in front of the courthouse.

When asked why he still comes to the Market every Saturday, Mr. Luther smiled and shared a few special reasons.

“Kind of like the Hank Williams, Jr. song Family Tradition,” he said, “my dad used to take me to the Market when I was a boy.” Back then, they were called curb markets. His dad would buy him a cupcake for five cents, and Mr. Luther said, “It was the highlight of my week.”

 

He also treasures the freshness of the produce, breads, and eggs he’s able to purchase each week. “I’ve always heard that what you put into your body is what helps you live a long and healthy life,” he shared. Fresh foods, fewer chemicals, and locally grown products are important to him.

 

Mr. Luther also appreciates the opportunity to support the talented artisans and makers at the Market — finding one-of-a-kind items you simply can’t find anywhere else.

 

But perhaps his favorite part of all is the people.

“The vendors have always brought a smile to my face with their personalities and humor,” he said — a smile he carries with him for the rest of the day.

 

Stories like Mr. Luther’s remind us that the Market is more than a place to shop. It’s tradition, community, friendship, and memories passed from one generation to the next.

Each week, local growers work tirelessly to bring fresh produce, flowers, eggs, meats, and handmade goods to our community. This week, we wanted to introduce you to one of the wonderful farms that helps make the Oconee Farmers Market so special.

Nestled in the quiet beauty of Madison County, Wild Acres Farm is a farm rooted in hard work, stewardship, and a deep love for growing good food for the community.

From rows of leafy greens glowing in the morning light to baskets overflowing with squash, tomatoes, radishes, kale, and mushrooms, every corner of Wild Acres Farm reflects the care and dedication poured into the land each season. Their farm is not only beautiful, but intentional — growing food the way nature intended, with patience, respect, and an understanding that great produce begins long before harvest day.

Walking through Wild Acres Farm, you quickly realize this is more than a place where vegetables are grown. It’s a working ecosystem filled with pollinator flowers, carefully tended rows, seedlings waiting for their season, and harvest baskets gathered by hand. From vibrant greens and summer squash to specialty tomatoes and mushrooms, every crop reflects the patience, dedication, and rhythm of small-scale farming. Kids’ Korner This Saturday – 🐐 The Petting Zoo is BACK!

After being rained out last Saturday, our petting zoo is returning this weekend and we are so excited! Bring the kiddos out to meet baby goats, ducks, rabbits, chickens, and guineas during Market hours from 9 AM – 1 PM at Wire Park.

June 6 Celebration at the Market

We’re also preparing for our June 6 community celebration and we can’t wait to share it with you!

We’ll have:
❤️ A patriotic selfie station
🤍 A community reflection arch where visitors can share what community means to them
💙 Red, white & blue fun throughout the Market

🎉 Special activities in Kids’ Korner

We are also excited to announce a month-long diaper drive beginning June 6 in partnership with the Athens Area Diaper Bank. Donation bins will be located around the Market throughout June.
